Spools & Bobbins

This is an amazing block because there are several design options.
"Spools & Bobbins" is one of my favorites. Placement of color gives you the barn raising setting.
The border look has a variation that is not mentioned in the pattern directions. We put a 4 patch in the center instead of one large square. This allows for the smooth transition of color. To make the 4 patch use 2" strips. Divide the center on the foundation sheet into a 4 patch and extend the lines into the 1st round. Place your sewn 4 patch in the center and align the seam lines with your extended lines. Pin or glue in place. Trim the 4 patch just inside the center lines. Now add strips following the numerical sequence.
DESIGN SHEETS - Color in a blank design sheet to determine your color placement and design. Once you've colored in your design sheet, transfer colors to the foundation sheets. This is a bit time consuming but it is well worth the time spent. If using a 4 patch, don't forget to draw a 4 patch in the center and color in the appropriate squares.
STRIP SIZES - Don't forget to note the different size strips used in the block. I usually just cut all my strips 1 1/2" wide and trim to fit plus a few 1 3/4" strips for the corners. However, I'm not always fabric conscious, I go for the easy, speedy way.
